Should You Take CBD to Help Manage Pain or Treat Other Illnesses?

In the search for natural remedies to treat various kinds of illnesses without the side effects, scientists discovered an herbal drug from a somewhat unlikely plant.

CBD Discovery

While the word “cannabidiol” is a fairly new term to people’s vocabulary, it’s not entirely new to the world of medicine.

It can be noted that, just like many other natural remedies, CBD and medical marijuana have been used by many ancient societies to treat certain diseases. In fact, the first use of hemp oil for pain can be traced back to 2727 BC. Since then, it has been used for a variety of health problems, including malaria, gout, and even poor memory.

In the early 1900s, the use of medical marijuana required a prescription in some parts of the globe and was completely prohibited in the United States in 1937. Then, in the 1940s, a team from the Illinois University isolated CBD, recognizing the fact that there were active compounds that didn’t have the psychoactive qualities that were commonly associated with the cannabis plant.

Later in the 1970s, the passage of the Controlled Substances Act made it difficult for anyone to obtain marijuana even for medical use. It was believed that such a move was more likely a result of pushback from the pharmaceutical industry because they save a potential competition in natural medicines, like hemp oil for pain.

It was in the early 1980s to the early 1990s that CBD gained traction for its pain-relieving qualities. In 1996, the medical use of marijuana was legalized in California. A few years later in the United Kingdom, a British pharmaceutical group officially started medical trials using CBD.

In 2004, a young girl who suffered at least 300 seizures a week was reported to have found relief for the first time due to CBD and medical marijuana. Eight years after, Washington and Colorado legalized the recreational use of marijuana. Today, numerous states followed suit with various restrictions.

CBD and Pain Relief

CBD (cannabidiol) is the second most prevalent ingredient of the marijuana plant. But even if it is an essential component of the marijuana plant or cannabis plant, it is directly derived from the hemp plant, a cousin of the former. According to the World Health Organization, it does not exhibit any effect that indicates it can cause a person to become high or to be dependent on it. In fact, there has been no reported evidence of any health problems associated with pure CBD oil.

One of the hemp oil benefits is that it offers pain relief. Researchers believe that CBD interacts with the receptors of our cell-signaling system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which are found in the brain and immune system. These tiny proteins attached to our cells receive the chemical signals from various stimuli to make the cells respond. In the case of using hemp oil for sleep or pain, the response of the cells creates pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects that relieve pain. In other words, CBD oil and other products can help manage pain in people suffering from chronic back pain and other similar conditions.

A study conducted in 2016 revealed that CBD can offer relief for pain caused by arthritis. Rats that were showing signs of arthritic pain were given CBD for four consecutive days. The researchers discovered that there were reduced inflammation and overall pain in the rats. What’s even more amazing is that they were showing no side effects. It was also found out that the rats that were given 6.2 mg/day showed more significant improvements compared to those that were only given low doses of 0.6 to 3.1 mg/day of CBD.

Another report showed that short-term use of CBD oil can help reduce the muscle spasms that a person with multiple sclerosis (MS) suffers from, causing them immense and constant pain. Many people who were given pure CBD oil reported to have felt a significant decrease in the symptoms they feel.

Because of such studies, it is safe to say that CBD pain gel or pain relief cream has a great potential to help people suffering from arthritis or multiple sclerosis manage their pain.

CBD and Other Uses

Currently, pure CBD oil is showing promising possibilities.

Here are some other applications of CBD currently being researched:

· Drug withdrawal

· Epilepsy

· Smoking cessation

· Acne

· Type 1 diabetes

· Anxiety

· Alzheimer’s disease

· Schizophrenia

· Insomnia

· Cancer

Aside from that, most people who have been given CBD were able to tolerate it well without any adverse effects. And because it also lacks intoxicating effects, evidence suggests that it can definitely be used to help people without varying conditions.

However, additional research is required to prove the efficacy of CBD to treat such illnesses, especially cancer. Nevertheless, hemp oil is definitely showing promising potential as a versatile remedy for various kinds of ailments.
